The neighbor who does not tardily wait for you

والصاحبُ الذي لا يريد استخراج ما عندك بالملق،
The buddy who does not dig for your secrets with flattery

ولايُعاملك بالمكر،
Nor does he treat you with trickery

ولايخدعك بالنفاق. 
Or shames you with guil

هو الذي إن نظرت إليه أطال إمتاعك،
By looking into it, you will have your joys prolonged

وشحذ طباعك،
Your manners refined

وبسط لسانك،

وجوّد بيانك،
Your eloquence perfected

وفخّم ألفاظك. 
Your vocabulary enriched

ومن لك بشيء يجمعُ الأول والآخر،
Where shall you find a similar that contains the first and the last

والناقص والوافي،
The imperfect and the adequate

والشاهد والغائب،
The present and the absent 

والرفيع والوضيع. 
The noble and the mean

ومن لك بمؤنس لا ينامُ الا بنومك، 
Where shall you find an entertainer who does not sleep until you do

ولا ينطقُ الا بما تهوى..

And never utters except of what you desire

كتاب الرمال
Book of Sand

خورخي: هل جئت من بلدك البعيد لبوينس آيريس هنا لتبيعني كتاباً واحداً، أو تستبدلهُ بعدد من كُتُبي ؟

Have you come all the way from your country to here  in Buenos Aires to merely sell me one book? Or exchange it for a sum of my books?

الضيف: إنه ليس كأي كتاب!

It is not like any other book.

البشر هم مخلوقات من نيفرلاند، بلادُ الأساطير
Humans are creatures of Never land; the land of legends 

القصص تُعيد تشكيل خيالاتهم
Stories reshapes their imaginations

تُعززُ قيمهم الأخلاقية
reinforces their moral values

تهبهم عالماً مُسالماً
grants them a peaceful world

يأمنون فيه من الخوف والهلع
during which they are sheltered from fear and panic

هي طقس يفصلُنا عن الحياة اليومية
They are a ritual that separates us from the daily life

القصة تمرين خيالي يحطم حواجز المكان والزمان
A story is an imaginary exercise that breaks barriers of time and space

تغزو وجودنا وتغيره للأبد
It invades our existence and alters it forever

تُرفِّهُ عن مُشوشي التفكير
It brings comfort to those with confused minds

وتُشّوش على أولئك الذين ظنوا أن تفكيرهم مجرد رفاهية
And confuses those who are comfortable with their thoughts

القصةُ كما التاريخ، للإنسان مُجرَّد لُعبة
A story, much like history, is merely a game to man

لُعبةٌ تُعدِّلُ من قسوة عالمهِ المُتشظي المأساوي
A game that rectifies the harshness of his scattered and tragic world

تُبعثِرُهُ بالمُفاجآت
It disturbs it with surprises

هي حفلةُ الإنسان التنكرية
It is a man's costume party

وظيفتها في الحياة أن تعاونه على التنكر أكثر
It's sole function in life to a assist him in further disguise

لذا كان الكتاب فِهرس لتاريخ البشرية
That's why a book is an index of human history

وما يخبؤه لنا المُستقبل
As well as for what the future beholds for us

فيهِ دندنةُ اللغات الإنسانية،
It holds the singing of human languages

بنبرات الصوت الجميلة المؤثرة
with all the inspiring, beautiful tones

الشُّعاع الذي يتفجرُ من الظُلُمات
The light that bursts from darkness

السماءُ المُتواريةُ خلف التُّراب
The sky hiding behind the Dust

والإبتساماتُ التي ستظلُ تتلألأ حين ينطفيءُ كلِّ شيء
And the smiles that will keep on shining when everything else is dimmed

خورخي: النّصُّ مرتبٌ في شكل آيات، وفي أعلاه وُضِعت أرقام عربية، ما يعني أنهُ ليس كتابُ صلواتٍ وأدعية، فأرقامُ صفحاتهِ في العادة تكونُ بالرومانية!

The text is arranged in the form of verses, Arabic numerals have been placed above it, which means it is not a prayer book (which are usually paged using Roman Numbers)

في أخبارِ طريق الحرير ومُدنِه المفقودة
Amongst the tales of the Silk Road and it's lost cities

كانت هناك إشاراتٍ وأخبار
There were signs and reports

عن صومعةٍ نائية ينتبذُ اليها المتعبدون
Of a remote hermitage to which worshipers went in seek of solitude

وفي عام 1900 كان آبوت وونغ يحفرُ في دون هونغ الشهيرة بمدينة الرّمال
In the year 1900, as Abbot Wang was excavating in Dun Huang- known as the city of Sands

كشف عن سلسلة من الكهوف المنحوتة

 He came across a series of Carved Caves

وفي غار رقم 16 رأى آبوت بعينيه أعظم كنز كشفهُ إنسان
In cave 16, Abbot saw in his own eyes the most exquisite treasure found by man

طبقاتٍ وطبقاتٍ وطبقات من الكُتُب
Layers and layers and layers of books

كُتِب آخرُها عام 1200 قُبيل أن يُقرر آخر الرهبان أن يهجر المعبد
Last of which was written in the year 1200, the year in which the final clergyman decided to abandon the Cell

خوفاً من هجمات الأعداء الذين اشتدت وطأتهم على تلك الصومعة

In fear of increased attacks on the Cell

واحدة من تلك الصحائف حوت تعاليم دايموند سوترا
One of these manuscripts contained the teachings of Diamond Sutra

أقدمُ نص مؤرخ ومطبوع
The earliest dated printed text

وفي أخرى كانت أقدمُ خارطةٍ معروفةٌ للنجوم
In another scroll they found the oldest graphic star Atlas

1345 نجماً تم احصاؤها بدقة هائلة وبطريقة أقرب للمُعجزة
stars were carefully counted in a manner closely considered as a miracle

خورخي: أٌنظُر، كيف، لا يُعقلُ أن يكون هذا الكتاب الخفيفُ الوزْن يحمِلُ في أحشائه اربعين الف صفحة، ثُمّ أين الترتيب؟

Look..How? It is inconceivable that this lightweight book holds 40,000 pages within it. And where is the order?

الضيف: تأمل هذه الصفحةَ جيداً لأنك لن تراها مرّةً أُخرى

Study this page thoroughly, because you shall never come across it again.

تؤكِّدُ لنا الفيزياء أن الأجسام مكونة من فراغ، فراغِ هائل

Physics confirm that our bodies are made of vacuum; incredible space

تأمل الحبر على الورقة، المسّافةُ بين الحبر وسطحِ الورقة كبيرةٌ جداً

Look at the stains of ink on paper, the distance between the wiggles of ink and the paper's surface is big, so big

بالنسبة للألكترون، قد تُساوي المسافة بينك وبين الشّمس

For an electron it could be similar, in scale, to the distance between you and the sun 

ماذا لو كانت هناك عوالم في تلك المساحةُ الفاصِلةِ بينَ سطحِ الورقةِ والحبر 

 What if there were worlds in that immense space between the surface of the page and the stains of ink

مخلوقاتٌ من ظلِّ الحِبر، تسرحُ وتمْرح، وتصنعُ كلًّ تِلك القِصص

Creatures made of the shadow of ink; they play, fantasize, and make all our stories

كما أنّ الفراغَ بين الذّراتِ والألكترونات هو الذي يصنع أجسادناَ 

In the same way space between atoms and electrons is responsible for making our bodies

تخيَّلوا أن العوالمَ التي تقبعُ تحتَ ظِلِّ الحِبر، هي التي تصنعُ أفكارنا

Imagine that the worlds lying underneath the shadow of ink are responsible for making our thoughts

في الحرب العالمية الثانية،

During the 2nd World War, 

 اخترعت البشريةُ صواريخها لتُضاف الى القنابلُ التي تُمطرُ بها الطائرات

Mankind invented Missiles as an addition to the bombs dropped by air-crafts,

وقد تم دكُّ لندن بالآلاف منها

London was bombarded by thousands of them

وهُنا صورة تُظهرُ بقايا مكتبةٍ مهدَّمة،

And here you see an image, shows the remains of a demolished Library. 

 وفي وسطها تتراكمُ أعمدةُ الخشب والرُكام، أمّا  الرُّفوف المثبتة على الجدران فقد بقيت في مكانها والكُتُبُ في أحشائها تبدو بحالةٍ جيدة.

In the center is a heap of rubble and wooden columns, but the shelves on the walls have held fast and the books remained lined up along them seem unharmed. 

 ثلاثةُ رجالٍ يقفون وسط الركام: الأولُ يبدو مُتردداً يفحصُ الكتب، والثاني لابسُ النظّارةِ يمدُّ يده لإلتقاطِ أحدِ الكُتُب، والثالثُ يقرأُ في كتابٍ مفتوح.

Three men standing midst the rubble; one looking hesitant inspecting the books, another wearing glasses, is reaching for a book, and the third man is reading in an book open in his hands. 

 إنّهم جميعاً يعلمون عن الحرب، ولا يغفلون عن حجم الدمار، إنّهم لا يفضلون الكتُبَ على الحياة، إنهم يريدون مجرد مقاومةِ الفوضى، يتمسكون بحقهم الطبيعي في طرح الأسئلة.   

They are all aware of War, not ignorant to the massive destruction. They are not choosing books over Life. All they want is to resist chaos, asserting their natural right to ask questions. 

إنهم يحاولون في وسط الركام فهم العالم من جديد، أو ربما بنائَهُ من جديد.

Amidst the rubble, they are attempting to comprehend the world once again or maybe re-build it again

ما هذا الشيء الذي أمسكهُ بين يدي؟

What is this that I have in my hands

هل هذه خدعة؟

Is this a hoax

لا صفحة منه الأولى

I cannot locate the first page

ولا توجدُ له صفحةٌ أخيرة

Nor can I find its last page

قررتُ أن أحصل عليه، لقد قايضتهُ بعددٍ كبير من الكتب النادرة لدي

I have decided to barter this book in exchange for a substantial number if the rare books I had

ولكن، هل كل الكتبِ قابلةٌ للقراءة؟

However, Are all books meant to be read

ثمّةُ كتابٍ لم يقرأهُ أحد قط، مخطوطةُ فوينتش، والتي توصف بأنها أكثرَ النصوصِ غموضاً قي العالم

The Voynich Manuscript - is the book that has never been read which has been described as the most mysterious text in the world

فالأوراقُ التي يبدو أنها تتحدث عن نباتاتٍ وأعشابٍ غيرِ معروفةٍ لنا، قد كُتِبت بلُغةٍ لا يعرفها أحد  

The pages that seem to explore the topic of unknown plants and herbs are written in an incomprehensible language 

يظن المختصون أنها كتبت بشفرة سرية بقصد التعمية

Some experts believe it was written as a ciphertext 

with hidden message

حاول الكثيرون تطبيق كل الطرق المعروفة لفك تلك اللغة، وقد صمد الكتاب وأحرفه حتى هذا اليوم ضد كل المحاولات لإقتحام معانيه

Many professionals have tried to decipher the text, to unleash its secret language, but in vain

حسب التحليل المخبري عل عينةٍ من الصفحات، يعود تاريخ الكتاب الى القرن الرابع عشر

According to lab testing done on samples of the pages, 

the book is believed to be dated from the early 1400's

نرى تفاصيل مجهرية لبعض النباتات التي لا تشاهد الا  بالمايكروسكوب الذي لم يخترع بعد في ذلك العصر

The text contains microscopic details of plants that could only be viewed by a microscope (which was not invented at the time)

فهل في ثنايا هذا الكتاب الغامض ترياقٌ لكلِّ الأمراض؟

So does this mysterious book hold the antidote for all diseases

أم هي شعوذةٌ وسحرٌ لإستدعاء الأرواح؟

Or is it black magic and witchcraft
